MERELY THEATRE: A Genderblind Globe Is Coming Sooner Than You Think, And It Is In Balham

Merely Theatre is a genderblind Shakespeare rep company performing Twelfth Night and Romeo & Juliet in the Elizabethan-style Globe space at Theatre N16 in The Bedford, Balham on September 25-26.

London, United Kingdom - September 13, 2017 /MarketersMedia/ —

Michelle Terry has made headlines with her pledge for progressive casting choices at The Globe, SE1, but genderblind casting will arrive at The Globe, SW12 in just two weeks’ time. Merely Theatre will bring “Sweaty Shakespeare” to the Elizabethan-style Globe space at Theatre N16 in Balham, presented by a genderblind cast, providing a preview of what Shakespeare’s Globe might feel like when Terry takes control in April 2018.

The company will present two of the Bard’s best loved works, Twelfth Night and Romeo & Juliet. The company perform with only five actors, picked from a set of ten. Each track is double-cast with male and female ‘twins’, who play multiple characters of both genders. One twin is then selected for each performance, so the genders of the actors are fluidly jumbled.

In Shakespeare’s time, all actors were men, and played both male and female roles. The genderblind approach is simply a modern, inclusive extension of this Elizabethan practice.

At Theatre N16, Balham, this fluid mix has resulted in the second ever all-female performance from the company, of Romeo & Juliet. Twelfth Night will see a female Toby Belch and Andrew Aguecheek.

The genderblind approach is ‘old news’ to the company, who instead put their focus on energy, clarity and creating a real connection with the audience.

Artistic Director Scott Ellis explained, “We were thrilled to read about Michelle Terry’s policies for The Globe. We have toured the UK twice, proving it is possible to perform the plays as written, and tell their stories in vivid and imaginative ways, with a genderblind cast. We will demonstrate this to London audiences at the Theatre N16 shows, in a micro-machines Globe Theatre. Best of all, standing tickets are still £5!”

The company has been working in rep for years to develop a style that presents Shakespeare: Remastered. One of their most important principles is the obliteration of the fourth wall; the audience exists in the world of the play, shifting them from passive observers to active participants. The Balham Globe is therefore the perfect environment to present their work.

Sarah Peachey, an actor in the company, explained, “We put the audience first. As a cast of five we have to generate the energy of twenty, for and with the audience. This amazing atmosphere lifts the whole show to another level, especially in a space like the N16 Globe where the audience is all around you.”

The shows have received outstanding reviews:

Romeo and Juliet is, “Wonderful… it brought a new clarity to the text… a 90-minute production with laughs, high energy and heartbreak.” ***** Pocket Size

Twelfth Night is, “Unmissable! Hysterical and touching… Definitely no previous experience necessary to make sense of this production. An absolute treat.” ***** Everything Theatre

The shows can be booked through the Theatre N16 website.

Not home? Walmart wants to walk in and stock your fridge

Sep 22, 2017

NEW YORK — Would you be OK with letting a stranger into your house for the sake of convenience? Walmart is testing the idea with a new service that lets a delivery person walk into your home when you're not there to drop off packages or put groceries in the fridge. "This may not be for everyone," wrote Sloan Eddleston, Walmart's head of e-commerce strategy, in a blog post Friday; "but we want to offer customers the opportunity to participate in tests today and help us shape what commerce will look like in the future." The retailer said it is...

In new setback, Uber to lose license to work in London

Sep 22, 2017

LONDON — Uber will lose its license to operate in London because it may be endangering public safety and security, the local regulator said Friday, in a severe blow to a company already facing big questions over its corporate culture. The company, which has been beset by a litany of scandals over its management style — from accusations of sexism to the illegal use of software to trick regulators — was told it was not "fit and proper" to keep operating in London, where it has 3.5 million passengers and 40,000 drivers. "TfL considers that Uber's approach and conduct demonstrate...

Miss Turkey dethroned over 'unacceptable' tweet on coup

Sep 22, 2017

ANKARA, Turkey — Organizers have stripped Miss Turkey 2017 of her crown over a social media posting that was deemed insulting to the memory of the 250 people killed while opposing last year's failed military coup. Miss Turkey organizers said the 18-year-old Itir Esen was dethroned on Friday, a day after she won the contest and the right to represent Turkey at the Miss World contest in China. The organizers said in an emailed statement that her title was revoked because of a tweet in July that they described as "unacceptable." Runner-up Asli Sumen will now represent Turkey in China....

Public shaming likely but GOP wary of new laws after Equifax

Sep 22, 2017

WASHINGTON — Prospects are good for a public shaming in the Equifax data breach, but it's unlikely Congress will institute sweeping new regulations after hackers accessed the personal information of an estimated 143 million Americans. Since early this year, President Donald Trump and the Republican-led Congress have strived to curb government's influence on businesses, arguing that regulations stifle economic growth. Lawmakers have repealed more than a dozen Obama-era rules and the House voted in June to roll back much of Dodd-Frank, the landmark banking law created after the 2008 economic crisis that was designed to prevent future meltdowns. Several bills...

NASA's asteroid chaser swings by Earth on way to space rock

Sep 22, 2017

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA's asteroid-chasing spacecraft is swinging by Earth on its way to a space rock. Launched a year ago, Osiris-Rex will pass within about 11,000 miles (17,700 kilometers) of the home planet Friday afternoon. It will use Earth's gravity as a slingshot to put it on a path toward the asteroid Bennu. If all goes well, Osiris-Rex should reach the small, roundish asteroid next year and, in 2020, collect some of its gravel for return to Earth. Friday's close approach will occur over Antarctica. It will be a quick hello: The spacecraft will speed by at about...
