Jun 20, 2018

LONDON — The ashes of Stephen Hawking were buried Friday in a corner of Westminster Abbey that honors some of Britain's greatest scientists, between the graves of Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton. More than 1,000 people attended a service of thanksgiving in the ancient abbey for the physicist, who died in March at age 76 after decades of living with motor neuron disease. When he was diagnosed, aged 22, he was given only a few years to live. Hawking conducted groundbreaking research into black holes and the origins of the universe, and gained global fame as a popularizer and communicator...

In test case for gig economy, UK court backs contractor

Jun 20, 2018

LONDON — A London plumber who claimed he was unfairly dismissed after years of working as a contractor won a court ruling Wednesday giving him employment rights, in a closely watched case testing labor rules in the so-called gig economy. Britain's Supreme Court ruled that Gary Smith, who worked for Pimlico Plumbers full-time for six years, was entitled to rights such as sick pay and minimum wage. Smith sought to reduce his hours following a heart attack, while the company argued he wasn't entitled to such protection because he was a self-employed contractor. His case will now return to an...

U.K. authorities are also investigating whether Facebook data was used in Britain's referendum on leaving the European Union. The hearing before the U.K. parliament's media committee lasted nearly four hours and was unusual in its sheer tone. In one particularly heated moment, committee member Ian Lucas...

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling described the decision by a Cabinet sub-committee as the right move for the country and one that signaled a commitment to global connectivity, which would boost the economy for generations to come. "My department has met with local residents and fully understands their strength of feeling but this is a decision taken in the national interest and based on detailed evidence," he said. The location of a...

Cosmetics firm Lush criticized over 'police spies' campaign

Jun 20, 2018

LONDON — U.K. cosmetics retailer Lush was criticized by police and some customers Friday for using store window displays to criticize undercover police operations. The windows of more than 100 Lush stores in Britain featured displays supporting the Police Spies Out of Lives campaign. The windows include signs saying officers were "paid to lie" and crime scene-style tape reading "police have crossed the line." Britain is holding a public inquiry into undercover police operations that targeted anti-racism groups, leftists and environmental activists, among others. In some cases, undercover officers used false identities taken from dead children, and formed long-term relationships...
