“In the past, Chinese communities celebrated Chinese New Year by releasing firecrackers. When the practice became outlawed in many cities around the world due to fire safety concerns, it was the production of Chinese New Year music – and the creation of Chinese New Year albums – that created the festive mood.”

“Today, it is about having a presence on the internet, and since video content is set to constitute 80% of all consumer internet traffic by 2019, it is only logical that commercial companies ride on this wave by producing Chinese New Year-related videos,” Lee added.

As with the previous years, most videos produced for Chinese New Year 2018 harp on the concept of love and family, with many of these videos pitting against one another in a neck and neck competition to see which can tug at their viewers’ heartstrings the most.

“Many of these videos are made with the intention to make their viewers cry, and the best of these heart-wrenching videos are created by Malaysian companies,” Lee revealed.

“The first category will make you laugh, videos that aim to tickle your funny bone. The second category will trigger the more sentimental part of you, the part that yearns for the love and warmth of family.”

“The third category, however – they are simply heart-rending,” Lee choked when interviewed.
